A few days ago the World Boxing Council (WBC) announced that Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. is now the official challenger to middleweight champion Sergio Martinez. That mandatory title shot can easily be lost according to WBC president Jose Sulaiman. If Chavez moves on to a December 4 clash with WBA 154-poound champion Miguel Cotto, he will lose his mandatory status with the WBC.

"If he fights Cotto for the title of another organization, he would be abandoning the possibility of winning the middleweight title against the winner of Sergio Martinez and Paul Williams. It is not a situation where we are taking away that opportunity. He would be walk away from it," said Sulaiman to Sal Rodriguez.

Chavez's co-promoter Fernando Beltran of Zanfer doesn't view the fight with Martinez as the most profitable opportunity for his fighter. The best option for them at the moment is a fight with Cotto.

"Julio is looking for the best options and the best one fight now is Cotto, who is considered the best super welterweight in the world, and it's a great opportunity for Julio. I do not know what will happens, because he will make that decision, but is very geared towards having a fight with Cotto," Beltran said.
