On June 8th Adonis "Superman" Stevenson captured the WBC light heavyweight title in dramatic fashion by knocking Chad Dawson out a mere 76 seconds into their contest. Stevenson took a risk by moving up to 175 pounds when he already had a mandatory spot secured for a shot at the IBF super middleweight title.
On a recent appearance on BoxingScene Radio, Stevenson said that he never doubted that his power would carry up to the higher weight.
"I have power at 168 and 175. I knew I was going to catch him and I knew when I caught him I knew I would knock him out," Stevenson explained.
The Haitian-Canadian said that the fight he wants next is a unification fight against IBF light heavyweight champion Bernard Hopkins. The 48-year-old recently fought Jean Pascal twice in Montreal and Stevenson knows that a fight against Hopkins would also be a huge in the boxing crazed city.
"Bernard is a great champion. I would like to unify the titles. He's a great boxer and very intelligent in the ring. People in Montreal know Bernard Hopkins because of his two fights with Jean Pascal. The people in Montreal want to see the fight. There would be 20,000 people in the building," Stevenson told BoxingScene Radio.
I mentioned the success Hopkins had a against the power punching Jean Pascal and Tavoris Cloud and asked him what he would do differently from what they tried against the defensive genius.
"For one I'm a southpaw. Bernard is a smart fighter but you have to realize my power. There are 12 rounds. You can run and you can hide but there are four sides of the ring and eventually I will catch you plus I can box too and I have a good trainer who will have a good strategy," Stevenson stated.
The 35-year-old also said that he doesn't think that Dawson would want to face him again after such a devastating loss. He also said he wouldn't have any problems going to the UK to face Carl Froch.
"He has a clause for a rematch but I knocked him out in 76 seconds. I don't think that would be good for him. I would get him again. I have a lot of options. Carl Froch, Bernard Hopkins. I can make 168 and go to England to knock him out. I don't have a problem doing that. He has a perfect style for me," Stevenson reasoned to BoxingScene.
