Both Steven Butler and Stephane Fondjo made the 168lbs weight limit for their matchup on Thursday.
Butler, 36-5-1 (30 KOs), came in at the super middleweight limit, while Stephane Fondjo, 14-1-1 (9 KOs), was slightly below it at 167.6lbs. The meeting between Montreal residents will be Butler’s third fight since moving up from middleweight, while Fondjo, a native of Cameroon, has fought the entirety of his career at or around this weight.
“I’m happy to be able to offer fans another great local fight, but in the end, I’ll remind everyone – Fondjo first – that I belong on the international stage,” said “Bang Bang” Butler, 30.
The 27-year-old Fondjo, who has fought three of his last four fights in Canada, predictably feels differently about their ten-round fight at Casino de Montreal.
“I left my family behind eight years ago to cross the Atlantic and one day give them a better life. I’ve made every sacrifice, I’ve suffered often, and I respect Steven Butler for having a similar mentality — but once we’re in the ring tomorrow, it’s Butler who will suffer,” said Fondjo.
In the ten-round co-featured bout, Jhon Orobio, 15-0 (13 KOs), weighed 139.2lbs while Xolisani Ndongeni, 337 (19 KOs), weighed 140lbs. Orobio, 22, of Cali, Colombia has stopped his last two opponents, while the 35-year-old Ndongeni of South Africa is seeking to rebound from losses in two of his last three fights.
