The trainers of WBC super flyweight “Marvelous” Marvin Sonsona (13-0, 12 KO’s)are confident that the 19 year old has a good chance of winning the WBO title when he clashes with Puerto Rico’s Jose “Carita” Lopez (39-7-2, 32 KO’s) at the Casino Rama in Ontario,  Canada on September 4.

Trainers Nonito Donaire Sr who was brought in fairly recently by Filipino promoter Sammy Gello-ani to assist regular trainer Jun Agrabio were guests along with Sonsona on the popular dzMM Teleradyo program “Sports Talk” hosted by former Olympian and ex-senator Freddie Webb on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.

Donaire Sr said he was confident that Lopez would be knocked out because the 19 year old Sonsona was “fast and we have studied Lopez’ defensive style and our counter-punching will get him. Besides, Marvin is a smart fighter which is the first thing I saw.”

However, Donaire Sr who steered the career of his son Nonito “The Filipino Flash”  Donaire to become IBF/IBO flyweight champion with a sensational 5th round knockout of Vic Darchinyan said “we will not just go for a knockout and get tired because that’s the aim of Lopez . We will be ready to go twelve rounds if we have to.”

Donaire Sr said Sonsona “has power and doesn’t want to get hit and the training staff is adding to this in training and he will not forget what we’ve taught him.”

He said Sonsona has power in both hands but his best shots are the left uppercut and an overhand left as well as right.”

Agrabio said there were many who felt that Sonsona who has had only 13 fights so far is being rushed against an experienced opponent only for the money but that he believes “when an opportunity knocks at your door and you don’t take it then that chance may never come again.”

Sonsona himself said he was confident of beating Lopez and will do what we need to do to win.

Donaire said that Gello-ani was arriving in Manila from Cebu on Monday and if the entire team is unable to leave for Canada immediately he (Donaire Sr) and Sonsona would leave via Los Angeles Monday night while the rest of the team will follow on Tuesday.

Sonsona said his father was a professional boxer who took the ring name Ben Samson. We learned that his father fought as a flyweight between 1984-1986  and had a record of 5-8-3 with 2 knockouts.

Sonsona said he stopped his studies because “I really liked boxing very much and wanted to help my parents who support me all the way.”
