Former three-division champion "Sugar" Shane Mosley (44-5, 37KOs) is targeting a fight with WBA welterweight champon Antonio Margarito (37-5, 27KOs) in early 2009. He hopes that a win over Ricardo Mayorga on September 27 will lead to a Margarito showdown next year.

A few days ago, Margarito's co-manager, Sergio Diaz, told BoxingScene.com that a fight with Mosley would do big business if it was staged in Los Angeles, where both fighters are very popular.

"I think a fight with Shane Mosley would be a great fight, especially if they fought in Los Angeles. Whoever Top Rank puts in front of Tony, he will fight," Diaz said.

Margarito was scheduled to return on November 1, but the fight was coming up quick and sensing there was not enough time to train, his ring return was postponed until next year. Top Rank's Bob Arum, who promotes Margarito, would like to put together a televised doubleheader with Margarito and Miguel Cotto in early 2009. He wants them to fight on the same night, but in different locations. Cotto would headline in Puerto Rico, while Margarito would headline in Los Angeles - opening up the door for a potential Mosley bout.

Mosley is under the impression that Margarito pushed back his November fight in order to see what happens on September 27. He believes Margarito is waiting for him to dispatch of Mayorga in order to set up a fight between the two of them. A fight that Mosley wants to land more than anything.

"I think he is waiting for me. I saw where he chose not to fight this November so once I fight [and beat Mayorga], we will mix it up hopefully," Mosley said during a recent MaxBoxing.com chat.
