Saturday night’s fight card in Pomona, CA may not have been at a large arena or televised on a major network.
The card did not even feature a fighter that even casual fight fans may be familiar with.
Judging by the crowd reaction and the evenly-matched fights that occurred that night, it was all that mattered - especially to first-time promoter Shane Mosley.
The former world champion in three weight classes promoted the five-bout “KO Cancer-Boxing for the Cure” card, which was in conjunction with Diamond’s Love Foundation and the Susan G. Komen for the Cure.
In the main event, Kaliesha West won a hard-fought 10 round unanimous decision over Christina Ruiz. West hails from nearby Moreno Valley.
“This was a great show,” Mosley told BoxingScene.com after the fight card was over. “My sister (Cerena) and the staff did a great job tonight. It was a success.”
Aside from West, there were a number of local boxers fighting on the card. These fighters brought a number of family and friends who were amongst the sold-out crowd in attendance.
Mosley is eyeing more shows featuring more local talent.
“That was the main idea. We wanted to feature local fighters like we did tonight.”
With the success of the card, Mosley is optimistic about promoting more shows. However, he needs to assess all of the details that every promoter must do after every show.
If done the right way, Mosley thinks he could promote shows on a regular basis.
“We’re not sure about when we’ll do another show. We have to go back to the drawing board and see what we need to do. We would like to do a show every month or every two months. The fans came out tonight (Saturday) and we want to continue that.”
Mosley, who grew up in Pomona, signed autographs and took pictures with fight fans throughout the evening.
