Six years after his last fight, former two division Sergio Martínez is planning for his ring return.
Martinez, who was last seen in action after getting knocked out by Miguel Cotto in 2014, wants to come back to boxing by the end of the year.
The Argentine star had been planning to fight again in June, but the coronavirus pandemic put those plans on hold when sporting events were paused in the country.
Back then, Martinez would have loved a showdown with Mexican superstar Saul "Canelo" Alvarez.
Now at 45-years-old, Martinez makes it clear that he's not returning to the sport to chase down a payday with Canelo.
Martinez admits that during his final years in the sport, he was feeling a disconnect with the sport - and he believes that connection has finally come back.
After suffering several injuries, specifically to his knees, he decided to retire from the sport as the pain would hinder his work in the ring.
"The truth is that I had not considered the scenario of facing Canelo Alvarez , I thought a lot about my return but it was never for that reason. If it were, it would be great, but ultimately I am not looking for that fight,” Martinez told Erika Montoya.
"In my last two years in boxing I fought for commitment and I thought I had lost that connection with the sport, but now I feel that he is different and that is why I do not look for Canelo as my option. I'm more focused on fighting and enjoying what that means."
