Sergio "Maravilla" Martinez continues to press for a fall showdown with the new WBC middleweight champion, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. The young Mexican was crowned last Saturday at Staples Center in Los Angeles, winning a twelve round decision against German boxer Sebastian Zbik. The two boxers were fighting for a belt that Martinez lost, but not in the ring. Martinez dropped the title when the WBC tried to force his hand in defending against Zbik. American cable network HBO refused to approve Zbik as an opponent for Martinez and would only approve Paul Williams.
"I'm interested in recovering the 160-pound championship. It was my belt and I lost it without losing a fight in the ring, and Chavez in this fight (against Sebastian Zbik) was a man and a man should not shy away from a challenge. In addition to being a man, he's a Mexican and I can not imagine a Mexican avoiding a fight, so I hope that Chavez and the promoters will want the fight. Hopefully we can fight on October 1," Martinez said. "I thought he won his fight quite clearly. I noticed changes and improvements."
