According to Golden Boy Promotions CEO, Richard Schaefer, a possible mega-fight between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Amir Khan would take place in the final quarter of 2012, likely in November. Both boxers have a lot left to do. Mayweather has to beat WBC welterweight champion Victor Ortiz on September 17th, and Khan will defend his IBF/WBA junior welterweight titles on December 10 in the United States.

In December, Khan will likely face Erik Morales - if the Mexican boxer beats Lucas Matthysse on the Mayweather-Ortiz undercard, or the British star could go up against Robert Guerrero - if he beats Marcos Maidana on August 27th. IBF mandatory Lamont Peterson is also an option. If Khan pulls through in December, he will make his welterweight debut on a March date in the UK.

"Mayweather is the fight Khan is moving towards and Mayweather wants the fight. Floyd fights Victor Ortiz next month and Khan has to get through a couple of guys first, but after that this fight is likely. It will be huge — Khan is good enough," Schaefer told Daily Mail.

Of course, a Khan fight could be pushed back if Mayweather reaches a deal to face his career rival, Manny Pacquiao. The two sides have been trying to make a fight for the last two years. If Mayweather wins in September, Schaefer will once again sit down with the fighter to discuss a possible Pacquiao clash.
