Jermall Charlo made quite the statement in stopping the highly regarded Julian Williams in five rounds this past Saturday night at the Galen Center on the campus of USC on Showtime.
Williams, who was his IBF mandatory, was tabbed by many experts to take Charlo's crown but instead was sent to the canvas by a jab in the second round and then after getting hit by a right uppercut, finished in the fifth frame.
The promoter of this card, Ringstar Sports CEO Richard Schaefer (who's company staged their first event) believes that Charlo (25-0, 19KOs) is ready to go big game hunting at 154.
When asked who he'd like to see him in against next, Schaefer told BoxingScene.com at the post-fight press conference - "A guy who's (nick)name starts with a 'C' and ends with an 'O'."
It's obviously a reference to Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez, who currently holds the WBO belt and is one of the game's true superstars. The problem is that he's handled by Golden Boy Promotions, which isn't exactly on good terms with Schaefer - it's former CEO - who left the company in 2014.
Will the two sides actually be willing to do business with one another?
"C'mon if we really want to do the best fighting the best then we've got to do that," said Schaefer chuckling. "We can't just say it, we've got to do it and I think it'll be a lot of fun, imagine the press conferences, the fun we would have."
Well, 'fun' is an interesting way of putting it. There's no love lost between the two sides, who went to litigation after Schaefer resigned from his post at Golden Boy.
"But seriously, I think Charlo at 154 is a beast, I really don't see anybody at 154 who can beat him and I think 'Canelo' is thinking something between 154 and 160 - at least that's what I hear. 'Should I stay at '54, should I go to '60?' He's been fighting at over the '54 pound limit, as well. I'm sure that would be OK with Charlo, so there's a lot of possibilities out there," Schaefer said.
"I understand 'Canelo' would be a long shot. I don't think they will put 'Canelo' in with Charlo. I don't think (Golden Boy CEO) Oscar (De La Hoya) would do that fight. But there's a lot of other big fights out there and he clearly is the new sheriff at 154."
