WBO middleweight champion Billy Joe Saunders lashed out over Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez's decision to vacate his WBC championship.
The World Boxing Council had ordered Canelo to make a mandatory defense against Golovkin, who owns the WBA/IBO/IBF middleweight world titles.
The WBC set a purse bid deadline for May 24th in Mexico City. But on Wednesday Canelo made an unexpected decision to vacate his middleweight belt. He claimed in a statement that his decision was motivated by the WBC's deadline - a claim which Saunders refuses to believe because the WBC set that deadline some time ago.
Saunders' temper hit a high note when discussing Canelo's boasts which came a week earlier, in the aftermath of the KO win over Amir Khan, when Canelo made Golovkin enter the ring to tell him that "Mexicans don't f*** around." Canelo also said he was ready to put his gloves back on to fight Golovkin that very night.
"Alvarez is a complete sh*tbag, an absolute little sh*tbag. Why would he vacate? I understand it's business, but no matter what your team says, and it's business...and he don't need the money he's a multi-millionaire. But why he vacate the belt rather than fight another champion. Why would he do that? To me that's low. He's robbing the fans of a big fight. Saying that you'll get in the ring with him that night, he's a sh*tbag. It really baffles me why he would do that," Saunders told IFL TV.
"What I can't get over is being a man, being a human being, you've got the WBC middleweight title and then all of a sudden you vacate it. If that was my team I would say 'I've got my pride here, the whole world is watching this, the whole boxing planet is watching this. I'm not going to vacate the title, let's make the fight.' That's what should have been said - because at the end of the day the team works for him. The whole outfit works for Alvarez. Every single one of them works for Alvarez. Alvarez has got the final decision, not them."
"The week before you say you'll fight him now and tell him to get in the ring - and then you vacate the belt. That's what sh*tbags do. Alvarez has lost all respect from me."
According to Canelo, he is still very interested in the fight and ordered his promoter, Golden Boy Promotions, to make a deal.
Saunders believes the fight will never happen.
"It's never going to happen. It will never happen. The only big name and cash cow that Golden Boy's got is Alvarez," Saunders said.
