Saul “Canelo” Alvarez is preparing for his showdown with Sugar Shane Mosley as the co-feature to the Floyd Mayweather Jr vs. Miguel Cotto fight in Las Vegas, NV on May 5th. Canelo appeared on the most recent edition of BoxingScene’s official audio show "The Boxing Lab" and spoke about his training and what he expects from Mosley.
Many have written off Shane Mosley as he’s failed to claim a victory since his 2009 win over Antonio Margarito and has lost to the two best fighters in the world in Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao. While everyone may already be dismissing Mosley, one person who isn’t is Alvarez.
“I expect the best Shane Mosley. If you recall, they said Margarito was going to finish Mosley because he was done and look what ended up happening. Mosley is a great fighter who’s very intelligent and always gives great fights” said Canelo.
“Obviously, there are fighters that give him difficulties so that’s what we want to do too. He looked different with all 3 fighters (Margarito, Mayweather & Pacquiao) and why? Because all three fighters are different and have different styles. But we expect the best Mosley and we are prepared for that”.
Canelo is currently training in Big Bear, CA which has served as a back drop for many other fighters in preparation for big fights. In fact, Mosley is also currently training in Big Bear and has set up camp not too far away from Alvarez’s as they could easily walk over to one another’s camp. Alvarez was asked if he felt a bit odd having his opponent so close.
“No, the truth is it doesn’t feel strange. I’m focused on my training and I haven’t thought about it. We haven’t run into each other but even if we do, it doesn’t matter. We each train in our own place and each doing our own thing” explained Canelo.
Alvarez is not taking Mosley lightly and has been working extremely hard in camp to get ready. He actually expects a difficult fight from Mosley but he also understands a win in this fight will lead to bigger and better things.
“We are training very good. We’ve been working very hard and strong. We know the quality of opponent Mosley is. We know it’s going to be a difficult fight but I’m very happy because I know this fight is going to give me the pass [to other things]. But it’s going to be difficult which is why we are preparing a lot because we don’t want anything to go wrong or be careless. Mosley is a smart, strong, and fast fighter so we have to be ready and give our best that day” said Alvarez.
There is less than a month before the young lion and the aging veteran meet in the squared circle at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, NV.
