The man himself has spoken; unbeaten Mexican star Saul Alvarez (30-0, 22KOs) claims that Golden Boy President Oscar De La Hoya did approach his team to see if they were interested in fighting Floyd Mayweather Jr. on March 13 in Las Vegas. Alvarez spoke to Mexican writers in response to the numerous reports in the Mexican press that a Mayweather fight was on the table.

Golden Boy's CEO Richard Schaefer told BoxingScene.com on Monday that Alvarez was never a serious consideration to fight Mayweather but he does think the fight can happen one day in the future if Alvarez coninues to win and builds his name in America. Schaefer is trying to make a super-fight between Mayweather and Shane Mosley for the month of May.

Alvarez's team were not interested in having him go against Mayweather at this time. Alvarez was willing to accept the fight. His team advised him pass on the offer. He plans to move forward with his March 6 ring appearance in Mexico. The 19-year-old welterweight is confident about his ability to fight the best.

"Oscar De La Hoya Valley offered that fight to my coach. I believe that it is a difficult commitment, but I truly felt that I wouldn't have anything to lose. Mayweather is a difficult opponent and one must be in the proper form to beat him," Alvarez told The Record.

"I have fought opponents such as Euri González or Lanardo Tyner who had difficult styles. I believe that I can beat him. In the end I had nothing I lose. If I beat him I become huge and if I lose, it happened against the best, so of course I would have taken the risk."
