Orlando Salido knew that he wouldn’t be able to make weight for his featherweight title defense against Vasyl Lomachenko, even bringing a doctor from Mexico into San Antonio the week of the bout before concluding that getting down to 126 was not going to happen, according to Top Rank spokesman Lee Samuels.
Salido came in at 128.25 pounds and then took a drink of Gatorade, Samuels said. He did not seek to get down to the featherweight limit, and instead paid $15,000 to Lomachenko.
Their fight will go forward on the HBO televised undercard to Saturday’s rematch between Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. and Bryan Vera at the Alamodome.
Lomachenko came in at 125.25 pounds.
Only Lomachenko will be able to pick up the World Boxing Organization’s featherweight title of he wins. If he loses, the belt will be vacant, just as it was when Mikey Garcia came in overweight for his defense last year against Juan Manuel Lopez.
