Mexican veteran Marco Antonio Rubio (59-6-1, 51KOs) is not intimidated by the feared punching power of WBA/IBO middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (30-0, 27KOs). The possible fight is targeted for October 18th on HBO, with Los Angeles as the city of choice. Rubio is the mandatory challenger to WBC champion Miguel Cotto, but he doesn't expect the Puerto Rican star to face him and views Golovkin as the next best thing out there.
"I would have had to wait several months until the WBC convention in December in Las Vegas, [to get an order] for the [mandatory] position to Cotto, so it's better for me take this fight, which does not scare me at all. If Gennady has power, then I have just as much or more power in my fists," said Rubio said to Fox Deportes.
"We must train and stay fit. I never stopped training, but it's different when you're in the gym [in Oxnard] with so many champions in different divisions because you get motivated when you arrive."
"[I have] a great team led by Robert [Garcia], Marco Contreras, who is my physical trainer. I think all of us together can overcome Golovkin."
