Veteran trainer Robert Garcia believes Saul "Canelo" Alvarez has a lot more to lose in the Mexican mega-bout with Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.
The two country rivals will finally meet in the ring on May 6th, as part of Cinco De Mayo weekend.
The two boxers agreed on a catch-weight of 164.5-pounds. Canelo, holder of the WBO junior middleweight title, will head up from 154. Chavez Jr., who fought at the super middleweight limit of 168 in December, will have to come down a few pounds.
Garcia had actually trained Chavez Jr. for a little while after the boxer had broken away from a one-fight stint with Joe Goossen.
Lately, Chavez has been working with his uncle but he may approach Garcia to help prepare him for the May fight with Canelo. This is a very big opportunity for Chavez to perform at his very best and impress a lot of people, says Garcia.
"With this fight Canelo has a lot more to lose, because in the case of Julio - a lot of people think that he is already finished, that his best moments have passed, but with Canelo that's not the case. He's in full swing, he is only 26 years old and his entire future is in front of him," Garcia told Erika Montoya.
"Canelo is a fighter with a lot of discipline, he always arrives in great physical shape and that day should not be the exception. Julio will come in with a lot of desire and he will have to be ready, because he also has a lot to lose."
" But Chavez could win even with a loss, because if he performs well and gives a good fight - then some of the hope that fans had in him will return. Julio has the opportunity to show what he's always wanted to show of himself. This is his ideal opportunity."
