Trainer Freddie Roach says Miguel Cotto (39-4, 32KOs) has several options to choose from at junior middleweight and middleweight. Last Saturday night at Madison Square Garden in New York City, Cotto beat up Sergio Martinez to capture the WBC middleweight crown, but the Puerto Rican boxer weighed in at 155-pounds, which is only one pound above the junior middleweight limit.
Two of the bigger options for Cotto is a rematch with Floyd Mayweather Jr. and a junior middleweight fight with Saul "Canelo" Alvarez, who returns on July 12th against Erislandy Lara. At 160 the biggest fight would come against WBA/IBO champion Gennady Golovkin.
"We are going to see what's there between 154 and 160 pounds. Miguel can not do 147. There are several options. Maybe a rematch with Mayweather Jr. or maybe a fight with Canelo Alvarez," Roach said to Carlos Narvaez.
Cotto, now a four division champion with title wins at 140, 147, 154 and 160, will discuss his future return in a few weeks.
"Right now we are going to rest. We'll return to boxing in a few weeks. We know that Freddie is a tireless worker and we will sit down to discuss [what's next]," Cotto said.
