Freddie Roach, trainer of WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao, believes the Filipino star will have the best opportunity to end his drought of knockouts.
Pacquiao has been unable to end any of his fights inside the distance since the fall of 2009, when he stopped Miguel Cotto in the twelfth round. Since then, all of Pacquiao's fights have gone the distance.
On July 1, Pacquiao will defend his title against huge underdog Jeff Horn at the Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane, Australia.
Horn (16-0-1, 11 KOs, an 2012 Australian Olympian, has never faced anyone near the level of Pacquiao. Horn has been dropped in fights and his biggest wins are over faded former champions like Ali Funeka.
For the entire training camp, Roach will be pleading with Pacquiao - that he can not allow Horn to last the full twelve round distance.
"Yeah [he needs to win by knockout], I think Manny needs to fire up this time. This guy is a good puncher and he will trade with you. Manny can still punch and he has that killer instinct back, I saw a little bit of it in the last fight, he looked better than he had in a while and he’s starting to get that old offense going and I’m going to be pushing in training camp the whole time [for him to get a knockout]," Roach told On The Ropes Boxing Radio.
"We’re going to go out there and I think demolish this guy, which is what we need to do."
40,000 tickets have been sold for the event. Roach is not worried about the crowd. He feels Pacquiao will have over 50% of the venue on his side.
"Australia boxing isn’t the biggest sport in the world over there, the UFC and kickboxing are a little bit bigger over there, but they are great fans. Manny does have a big audience there, and I feel the crowd will be over 50% for Pacquiao," Roach said.
