If Miguel Cotto is victorious in Saturday night's defense of his WBC middleweight title against Daniel Geale at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, the heavy talk regarding his next opponent has revolved around mandatory challenger Gennady "GGG" Golovkin and Mexican superstar Saul "Canelo" Alvarez. Cotto has already confirmed that there is a verbal agreement to fight Canelo Alvarez should he come out victorious Saturday night.

Cotto’s trainer, Freddie Roach, feels that first it should be Geale, then Canelo Alvarez, and then Gennady Golovkin, who also holds the WBA/IBO belts at middleweight.

“They (Canelo and Golovkin) both just had fights,” Roach said to BoxingScene.com. After this we’ll talk to both camps and see what the best offer is. Canelo is the likely next. He does more pay-per-view. Its Puerto Rico vs Mexico, it’s a bigger fight right now. Golovkin’s making noise. He’s coming around, he’s a good puncher. I think the winner of Canelo-Cotto would have to fight him for sure. Gaby’s the negotiator, I’m just the trainer, and I get him ready.

Asked if he would love to have Cotto fight Golovkin next year, Roach stated, “I would love that fight next year.”
