NEW YORK – Among other things, Hasim Rahman Jr. called Jake Paul a liar and a scam artist during their verbal battle at a press conference Tuesday at Madison Square Garden.
Rahman refuted Paul’s claim that he demanded more money after agreeing to a purse last week to replace Tommy Fury as Paul’s opponent on approximately one month’s notice. The son of former heavyweight champion Hasim Rahman also dismissed Paul (5-0, 4 KOs) as a scammer who has built his brief career on beating non-boxers in YouTuber Ali Eson Gib, former NBA point guard Nate Robinson and ex-UFC fighters Ben Askren and Tyron Woodley.
Though the 31-year-old Rahman contended that he didn’t demand more money to go through with their Showtime Pay-Per-View main event August 6 at The Garden, he acknowledged that he is dissatisfied with his undisclosed purse for the highest-profile fight of his five-year pro career.
“This is such a huge opportunity,” Rahman said. “I never once, ever once, even second-guessed or even doubted the outcome of this fight. I did no negotiation through the Internet and I’m not going to. But whatever [Paul’s representatives] sent me, they sent me and they said, ‘Look, this is take it or leave it. Either you take it or leave it, and there ain’t no fight.’ And I took it. And that’s that. We here right now, so all this B.S. about going back and forth about ... all that stuff back and forth about the money or whatever, whatever, whatever, I’m gonna be the lowest-paid opponent, but I’m the biggest.
“I’m the one that’s giving you any credibility. None of your other opponents gave you any credibility. So, why shouldn’t I get more than them? But like I said, I’m not here to negotiate through the media. I’m not here to do none of that. I’m here to end this façade that he’s calling a career. … And we gonna see on August 6th, when Jake Paul fall. We definitely gonna see that.”
Paul interjected, but Rahman stated that he didn’t have time to waste by playing games.
“You’ve got all the time in the world,” Paul said. “What were you doing before this, bro? You’re a broke bitch, doing nothing. This is gonna be the last fight you ever take.”
The provocative Paul’s name-calling agitated Rahman, who questioned the authenticity of his upcoming opponent’s career.
“You scam people, bro,” Rahman said. “Bro, what are you talkin’ about? If I was scamming people, I wouldn’t be broke. If I was scamming people, I wouldn’t be broke.”
Regardless, Rahman reiterated that he didn’t demand more money.
“What are you talkin’ about? I didn’t ask you for nothing,” Rahman said. “I didn’t ask you for nothing. I didn’t ask you for more money. I never asked for more money, so what are you talking about. I never asked for more money. I took the lowest amount, at the highest level. I’m the highest-level opponent you faced, but I’m getting the lowest amount of anybody you ever fought.”
While Rahman (12-1, 6 KOs) will be the only professional boxer on Paul’s record come the night August 6, Paul feels Rahman should be thankful for the career-high purse he’ll make for their eight-round cruiserweight fight, the first non-heavyweight contest of Rahman’s pro career.
“Nobody knows who the f--- you are,” Paul said. “Two days ago, you had five thousand Instagram followers. You had five thousand Instagram followers two days ago. My mom has more followers than you. No one knows who you were. You’re not worth sh!t. This will be the last time anyone ever hears of you.”
