The wheels appear to be in motion to stage a fourth fight between Manny Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez this coming November, likely either in Las Vegas or in Mexico City.
Pacquiao is coming off of a highly-controversial split-decision loss to Timothy Bradley earlier this month in a fight that the public overwhelmingly saw in his favor. One fight earlier, this past November, Pacquiao struggled yet again with Marquez but managed to pull out a majority-decision verdict.
A fourth fight with Marquez may seem natural on some fronts as there is still no real closure in their trilogy but for some it serves no real purpose.
Speaking from the Mayweather Boxing Club in Las Vegas on Monday afternoon, trainer Roger Mayweather seemed less than thrilled about the idea of staging such a contest.
“For what? They don’t need that bullsh*t,” stated Roger. “They might as well sit back, relax, and let my nephew whoop his *ss. Then he’ll know who the truth is, that’s it.”
Roger’s nephew, Floyd Mayweather Jr., has long since been fantasized as a potential opponent for Pacquiao but at the moment the undefeated superstar is handling other matters as he is currently a few weeks into a 90-day jail sentence stemming from a September 2010 domestic violence case.
“I’m going to go see him tomorrow,” Roger would state of Floyd Jr. when asked about his situation. “I haven’t seen him in a while.”
Mayweather’s lawyers had requested for Floyd Jr. to serve the remainder of his sentence under house arrest due to their insistence that he has been treated unfairly in jail yet that motion was denied.
Roger still can’t understand why and vented his bemusement.
“I don’t know why,” Roger continued. “The mother*cker aint a criminal. I don’t know why they don’t give him house arrest privileges. I guess they want him to do time to make him feel like he’s in a cell block. That’s the only thing I could see.”
Now 35 years old, it remains to be seen how Mayweather’s recent inactivity will affect his prizefighting career but Roger has little worries that he will back in rare form following his return.
“Floyd’s been in jail before. This aint the first time Floyd’s been in jail. That’s part of life,” said Roger.
