According to recent comments made by promoter Lou DiBella and Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer, WBO welterweight champion Carlos Quintana (25-1, 19 KOs) is in the mix to fight former champion Shane Mosley (44-5, 37 KOs) in the main event of a May 31 HBO pay-per-view.
The day after Quintana upset Paul Williams for the WBO title, DiBella told BoxingScene.com's editor, Rick Reeno, that he loved the idea of a fight between Quintana and Mosley. The next step has been taken and DiBella has spoken with Schaefer about staging the fight and told boxing scribe Dan Rafael that their conversation went very well. DiBella has already spoken with Quintana and his trainer, who both like the idea of fighting Mosley.
"I called Richard Schaefer in the last 24 hours and he indicated that it was very interesting and we would speak about it again," DiBella said. "We agreed it would be an interesting matchup of styles and an exciting fight. I ran the fight by Carlos and his trainer, Jose Bonilla, and they like the fight."
Golden Boy was trying to negotiate with Don King to match Mosley with Ricardo Mayorga. After negotiations broke down, Zab Judah came into the picture as a possible replacement. Schaefer told UK media outlet Sportinglife that Judah and Quintana are the two frontrunners to fight Mosley on the May date.
