According to Dan Goossen, promoter of WBO welterweight champion Paul Williams (33-0, 24KOs), Saturday's title defense against Carlos Quintana will be another step towards a possible year-end showdown with WBA welterweight champion Miguel Cotto (31-0, 25KOs).
Speaking with El Nuevo Dia, Goossen says that Williams and Cotto, if they continue to win, may have no other "money making" options but each other at the end of year. He also says the winner would be right in line to challenge the winner of the September rematch between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Oscar De La Hoya.
"Supposing that Cotto beats Alfonso Gómez (on April 12) and then he beats the winner of Kermit Cintrón and Antonio Margarito and also suppose, like we expect, that Paul remains undefeated, Cotto and Paul are going to need a big fight for the end of year and I do not see a reason why a fight can not be made," Goossen said.
"Taking into account that Floyd Mayweather and Oscar De La Hoya have a rematch set for September, the fight between Cotto and Paul is even more important, because the winners of both fights can be matched next year in one of the largest events in the history of the boxing, especially if Mayweather beats De La Hoya again."
Despite his hunger to fight the big names, Willaims is not overlooking Quintana (24-1, 19KOs).
"Everyone always asks me about Cotto, Cintrón, Mayweather and those names, but I can assure you that my mind and my concentration is on Quintana. I know that I have to beat him to get to those fights," Williams said.
