Olympic middleweight gold medallist James ‘Chunky’ DeGale has hit out over the English ABA’s appointment of Robert McCracken, who trains Carl Froch and Tyson Fury. DeGale, 23, thinks that Rob will find it difficult to blend his role as a professional coach with the workload needed for amateur success.
“How's he going to do stuff with Carl and his professional stuff as well?” asked DeGale when speaking to Press Association Sport. “Firstly it's great and that but it's a nuts one isn't it? Is he going to be part-time? If he's staying with Carl then it's not a very wise move. They're having a laugh. They haven't got a clue. They are trying to make it a bit like the pros but they shouldn't do that. They are going to be in trouble in 2012. They think they've got it all right but trust me, they are in trouble.”
DeGale, who is 4-0 (3) as a pro, also heaped derision on David Haye’s victory over Nikolay Valuev by claiming that he could have defeated the 7’ Russian. “Haye boxed very, very well. But it was a boring fight,” opined DeGale. “Valuev is probably one of the worst heavyweight champions. He's big, but I could have beaten him.”
DeGale returns to the ring on the undercard of Khan-Salita at the Metro Arena, Newcastle on December the 5th.
