Hall of Fame trainer Nacho Beristain looks forward to a potential all-Mexican fight between Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (49-2-1, 32KOs) and Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez (48-1-1, 34KOs) on May 6th.
The two sides are negotiating a potential fight for May 6th, on HBO Pay-Per-View. The catch-weight being kicked around in 165-pounds, with Canelo heading up by eleven rounds and Chavez coming down by three pounds.
Chavez Jr. returned to the ring earlier this month and won a hard-fought ten round unanimous decision over Germany's Dominik Britsch (32-3-1, 11KOs) in Monterrey, Mexico. Canelo's last fight took place in September, when he captured the WBO junior middleweight title with a knockout of Liam Smith.
Nacho felt Chavez Jr. looked good in his last fight. It was the first time in over two years where Chavez Jr. weighed in under the super middleweight limit of 168-pounds.
The veteran trainer gives Canelo the edge with the edge in speed, defense and boxing ability.
"I think that Julio looked physically well in his last fight. He body looked good, but heavy. Canelo could get in there with him but there would be a significant weight difference, and I don't know if they will reach an agreement because in that aspect they have protected [Canelo from facing bigger men]."
"But it would be ideal for them to reach an agreement, and I would go for Canelo [to win], because he has speed. He throws better combinations and has been fighting constantly, while Julio has hardly been fighting and recently he was knocked out."
"The fight is going to be a success. Defensively Julio is not that good and takes a lot of punches and throws very few combinations, and there is not much variety [to his punches]. Canelo has speed, counter-punches well. Me personally, I would like to see that fight."
