Martin Murrray will take on his third fight in a span of barely 10 weeks, and this time with the stakes significantly raised.
The former top middleweight contender—now competing as a super middleweight—returns to the ring on September 5 in Leeds, England. The specifics of his appearance on the show have yet to be finalized, but a title belt of sorts will be at stake as he peforms in supporting capacity to local favorite Josh Warrington's homecoming versus Australia's Joel Brunker.
“Its been confirmed that my next fight will be Sep 5th in Leeds in a title fight,” Murray confirmed through his social media account on Monday. “
Looking forward to putting on a good show
.”
The addition of Murray to the Leeds show comes in the wake of super bantamweight Gavin McDonnell's showdown with Jeremy Parodi being pushed back a month. McDonnell needed the extra time to train, in order to travel with his brother—bantamweight titlist Jamie McDonnell, who travels to Texas for a rematch with Tomoki Kameda on that same weekend.
“With Gavin travelling to Texas with his brother Jamie to defend his WBA crown on September 6, I wanted to add a major addition to the September 5 card,” said promoter Eddie Hearn, in a statement through the Matchroom Boxing press office. “Martin has already boxed twice on Sky Sports in the last seven weeks but this time he will step up the opposition in a title fight as he gears up for a shot at a World title at Super Middleweight.”
Murray (31-2-1, 14KOs) signed with Matchroom Boxing this past June, with the intention of further building his brand at home in England—where he previously hadn't fought since Dec. '13—and establishing his presence in the super middleweight division. The move came on the heels of his brave showing earlier this year versus Gennady Golovkin, the unbeaten knockout artist widely regarded as the best middleweight in the world.
The 32-year old has picked up two quick wins—both taking place in England and just above the super middleweight division, coming in a three-week span. September's bout will be his first with a belt at stake, with the intention to move towards a major title in the super middleweight division as early as his next fight.
Details of the opponent and exact belt at stake are expected to be announced in the near future.
