BoxingScene.com was recently on hand in Denver, Colorado where former champion "Mile High" Mike Alvarado (35-4) was training for his upcoming June 25th bout against Josh Torres (15-4-2). The fight will be broadcast as part of UniMas' Solo Boxeo series.
After a 14-month layoff to clean up some personal issues, Alvarado returned to the ring in March and stopped Saul Corral. He said that what happens after his June 25th tuneup depends on how he performs in the fight that is slated to take place in Dallas, Texas.
"We will see what happens with this next tune up. If I do good and I am on solid ground after this fight and I feel comfortable to step up then we will go up to the next level. My goal is to go back for the belt, Vargas, or whoever. The WBC, WBO, WBA, any belt I want to get," Alvarado stated.
The 35-year-old former WBO super lightweight champion shares the same promoter as current WBO welterweight champion Jessie Vargas. Both fighters are promoted by Top Rank and Alvarado said that he was impressed with Vargas' title winning effort in March and wouldn't mind facing his friend down the line.
"That was a great win for Vargas. Big ups to him. He is a good friend of mine. I am glad he won and that he is doing his thing. I told him lets get together one time and take a picture with our WBO belts. You never know, God has his ways and we put on great fights and good shows so it could happen," said Alvarado who also revealed he had a new love for the sport.
"I love boxing now. I love it more now than I ever have in my whole career. I use to kind of just go along with it because I was good at it. I was talented. I was good at everything I did. Now that after everything and I am back, I love this sport and I am giving it all I got to get back to the top."
