New weight, same result for Mikaela Mayer.

The former unified IBF/WBO junior lightweight champion picked up her second win of the year in a ten-round, unanimous decision over Italy’s Silvia Bortot. Mayer won 100-90 on the lone scorecard turned in by referee Steve Gray during their bout just above the junior welterweight limit Saturday at AO Arena in Manchester, England.

Mayer fought exclusively behind her jab in the opening round of her first fight at a new weight. Forever done with the 130-pound division, Mayer decided after her April 15 win over Lucy Wildheart that lightweight wasn’t going to be her final landing place.

Saturday’s bout came at a contracted limit of 142 pounds, though Mayer—who was under that mark but at a career-high 141.3 pounds—plans to campaign at welterweight moving forward. She proved the ability to take punches at the higher weight, as Bortot was not without her success. The 38-year-old Italian boxer—a former European titlist—landed a three-punch combination early in round two.

Mayer took the shots well and responded later with a right hand to the body. She was the more active fighter, though Bortot was able to pick off a number of the incoming shots.

The action remained competitive through four rounds though with Mayer still in control. The American boxer—who now lives and trains in Las Vegas—used her jab to set up steady combinations and also scored with her lead left hook.

Bortot tried to change her luck in round five as she charged forward and initiated an exchange. Mayer kept composed and put in work to the body while her variety of jabs kept Bortot at the end of her desired punching range. Mayer was able to land a couple of right hands to briefly hurt Bortot towards the end of the round.

Mayer increased her lead in the second half of the fight. She outboxed and outpunched the naturally bigger Bortot in round six. Bortot forced Mayer to stand her ground a bit more in rounds seven and eight as both boxers planted their feet and threw power shots.

The aggressive approach by Bortot came at a cost in round nine. Mayer committed to a body attack, which drove Bortot to the ropes. Mayer landed several straight right hands and had Bortot pinned in a corner just before the bell.

Bortot (11-3-1, 3KOs) charged forward but was unable to change her luck in the tenth and final round. Mayer shook off a right hand to land a right and left hook to the body. Lateral movement by Mayer set up a final power-punching combination in the closing seconds of the bout. Bortot made it to the bell, though with a cut just outside her right eye and a third loss in six fights for her effort.

Mayer advanced to 19-1 (5KOs) with her second win after a heartbreaking split decision defeat to bitter rival Alycia Baumgardner in their 130-pound unification bout last October 15 in London. Saturday marked her third straight fight in the UK, with more likely to come as she fancies a shot at two-division and reigning IBF welterweight titlist Natasha Jonas (14-2-1, 9KOs).

Headlining the show, Liam Smith (33-3-1, 20KOs) and Chris Eubank Jr. (32-3, 23KOs) will meet in a scheduled twelve-round, middleweight rematch. Smith won their first bout via fourth-round knockout.
