The hard training continues in Florida. WBA 154-pound champion Miguel Cotto (37-2, 30KOs) and his Cuban coach, Pedro Diaz, are putting together the "perfect strategy" to defeat Floyd Mayweather Jr. (42-0, 26KOs) on May 5th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. When he first started working with Cotto, Diaz explained to Carlos Gonzalez that Miguel had to get used to a much hard training schedule.
Diaz helped Cotto move forward to a big win over Antonio Margarito in December. Cotto hired Diaz after parting way with Hall of Fame trainer Emanuel Steward.
"The truth is, for the Margarito fight the first 15 to 20 days were a bit difficult because they needed to [adjust] to some things, regarding the pace of the work and necessary tasks for training, but we settled and formed a good team. Outside the gym we are two great friends, and within [the gum], [we are] two great warriors who are fighting for victory," Diaz said.
"Like everything in life, it takes desire, dedication and discipline to meet expectations. You also need a good head, heart and courage. I think it's an equation that must be present not only for boxing but for life. To everyone who says that Miguel has no chance [to beat Mayweather], I tell them to watch the fight and when the end result is a victory for Miguel - we'll talk. The fundamental thing between us is that we're great friends, there is a great concept of work, discipline and a desire for victory."
