Most fans have called the bout between Miguel Cotto and UK's Michael Jennings a mismatch. Cotto refuses to listen to the chatter by looking ahead to a planned June rematch with Antonio Margarito. He takes on Jennings on February 21 at New York's Madison Square Garden. The vacant WBO welterweight title is on the line. The fight is part of a Top Rank split-feed pay-per-view, paired with Kelly Pavlik's defense of the middleweight titles against Marco Antonio Rubio in Ohio.
Cotto admits that he knows little about his opponent. Miguel and uncle/trainer Evangelista Cotto have begun to study a lot of videos of Jennings and say the British is a better boxer than many have given him credit for being.
"Jennings is not a typical boxer. He has a respectable right hand. He wings the right with the goal of it being very effective. In Jennings we don't see a typical opponent who just stay defensive, he is a complete boxer. I can't compare him with anyone else that Miguel has faced, but we understand that he has a lot of quality to him," Evangelista told Primera Hora.
"He places his punches well and knows how to utilize the ring. He knows what he is doing. Little by little we are going to see thing and we to make a decision what kind of strategy we plan to use in the fight."
Evangelista also downplayed the talk of Cotto taking backwards step by facing Jennings.
"Jennings is a fighter that nobody knows in this area, but in England - yes. He is ranked number two in the world [by the WBO]. So, somthing is thee and he is a respectable opponent," Evangelista said.
