Miguel 'Scorpion' Berchelt already has an opponent for his first defense of the interim-super featherweight world title of the World Boxing Organization. The hard punching Mexican was informed by his team that he will face the ultra-experienced Chonlatarn Piriyapinyo of Thailand.
The fight is being planned for a July in Mexico. Berchelt has not risen to the ring since March when he captured the vacant iterim-crown with a bruising stoppage of British contender George Jupp in Merida, Yucatan.
At the moment, the fight between Berchelt (29-1, 26 KO) and Piriyapinyo (61-2, 41 KO) will take place on July 16.
Piriyapinyo went twelve hard round against Vasyl Lomachenko in 2014, and since then has won his last nine fights.
Berchelt was scheduled to face then WBO super featherweight champion Roman 'Rocky' Martinez. The fight was canceled when Martinez claimed injury and he was replaced by Jupp.
Then a deal was worked out where Martinez could make a voluntary defense against Lomachenko last week. Martinez was brutally knocked out in five rounds at the Theater in New York's Madison Square Garden.
Per the agreement with the sanctioning body, Berchelt remains as the mandatory challenger to the WBO title. His promoters want to see how he does with a fighter who went the full distance with Lomachenko. If Berchelt passes the test with flying colors, his handlers will likely make a request to the WBO for an order which directs Lomachenko, a two-time Olympic gold medal winner, to satisfy his mandatory obligation.
