WBO super featherweight champion Jamel Herring (21-2) is scheduled to finally face Jonathan Oquendo (31-6) on September 5th inside of “The Bubble” at the MGM Grand Garden Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. Herring won his title in May of 2019.

The fight had been scheduled and canceled on two separate occasions due to Herring testing positive twice for COVID-19. The second test failure appeared to be a false positive as he tested negative the next day.

WBC super featherweight champion Miguel Berchelt is also an interested observer of the fight. He is expected to face unbeaten former featherweight champion Oscar Valdez in the fall but is also interested in a potential unification bout with Herring in the future.

“I think that Herring has had some very bad luck with them canceling the fight two times but hopefully it comes through and we get a good fight,” Berchelt told BoxingScene.com.

The 34-year-old Herring, a 2012 US Olympian, is the prohibitive favorite against Puerto Rico’s Oquendo.

Berchelt expects Herring to pull through with the victory but cautions that anything can happen. Oquendo has won five of his past six fights.

“I think Herring will win but in boxing you never know,” said Berchelt.
