Floyd Mayweather Jr. didn’t taken Adrien Broner’s challenge seriously after Broner beat Ashley Theophane on Friday night in Washington, D.C.

Mayweather is much more interested in promoting Broner bouts against either Errol Spence or Shawn Porter. The retired superstar’s company, Mayweather Promotions, promoted the card headlined by the Broner-Theophane fight Friday night and hopes to promote Broner’s next bout as well.

“Errol Spence is about to fight,” Mayweather told Fighthype.com in an interview posted Sunday. “Mayweather Promotions would love to put on Errol Spence and Adrien Broner. That’s a good fight. Or Shawn Porter and Adrien Broner. We don’t really wanna bring Maidana name up because he made so much money with Floyd Mayweather, he was able to retire, which is a great thing. And I’m very proud of Maidana – very tough competitor, tough and rough competitor. … That wasn’t an easy task for Adrien.”

Argentina’s Maidana (35-5, 31 KOs) dropped Broner twice on his way to winning a unanimous decision against the Cincinnati native in December 2013 in San Antonio. Broner (32-2, 24 KOs) also lost a unanimous decision to Porter on June 20 in Las Vegas, but Broner dropped Porter in the 12th round.

Spence (19-0, 16 KOs), a promising southpaw from DeSoto, Texas, is scheduled to face Chris Algieri (21-2, 8 KOs), of Huntington, N.Y., in a 12-round welterweight fight April 16 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn (NBC). Spence, a 2012 Olympian, confirmed last year that he knocked out Broner during a sparring session at Mayweather’s gym in Las Vegas three years ago.

Meanwhile, Porter (26-1-1, 16 KOs), of Akron, Ohio, is set to box Keith Thurman (26-0, 22 KOs), of Clearwater, Florida, in a highly anticipated welterweight fight June 25 at an undetermined site (CBS).

The time frame for the 26-year-old Broner’s return to the ring is unknown. The former junior welterweight and welterweight champion reportedly will turn himself in Monday to authorities in Cincinnati, where he faces felonious assault and aggravated robbery charges stemming from a Jan. 21 incident in which he allegedly beat and robbed an acquaintance with whom he had lost bets at a Cincinnati bowling alley.

Broner challenged Mayweather, his longtime mentor and friend, after stopping Theophane (39-7-1, 11 KOs) in the ninth round because he claims he was offended by Mayweather’s harsh comments about Broner during the promotion of the Broner-Theophane fight. The 39-year-old Mayweather (49-0, 26 KOs) hasn’t given any indication that he is considering returning to boxing.
