The biggest star in the sport, Floyd Mayweather Jr., will potentially retire from boxing within the next twelve months.
Mayweather (48-0, 26KOs) is scheduled to fight on September 12th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. He claims the fall return will be the final fight of his pro career. Most expect him to fight, at least one more time, to secure his 50th win. If he goes for fight number 50, it will likely take place on Cinco De Mayo weekend in May 2016.
Inching closer to 40-years-old, Mayweather admits his career is quickly approaching the final chapter. This coming weekend Mayweather's company, Mayweather Promotions, is the lead promoter for Premier Boxing Champions' televised events on Saturday and Sunday at the MGM Grand.
Two of the featured fighters on Saturday's card, which is televised by NBC, are potentially going to become the next superstars of the sport, according to Mayweather.
Errol "The Truth" Spence Jr. (16-0, 13 KOs) will open up the televised card with a welterweight scrap against late replacement Phil "The Italian Sensation" Lo Greco (26-1, 14 KOs). The main event is another welterweight battle, with Adrien Broner (30-1, 22KOs) taking on Shawn Porter (25-1-1, 16KOs).
"You have two guys, this weekend, Adrian Broner or Errol Spence. It takes a lot to get to this point. You can't just be able to fight you have to be able to communicate, have certain charisma. These guys have the right teams. If they continue to win, we bring the personality out of those guys and we'll see if where we can go from there," Mayweather said.
Mayweather recalls how Spence helped him prepare for Robert Guerrero in 2013.
"When I was getting ready for Robert Guerrero, who is a southpaw, the first guy I started looking to spar with was a southpaw and Errol was giving me real good work. He pushed me and made me get in tip top condition, and once I was in tip top condition, I was ready and the best I could be. He's a hell of a fighter," Mayweather said.
This past May, Mayweather shattered every existing financial record with his pay-per-view mega-fight against Manny Pacquiao. He hopes one day a fighter will come along to break those records.
"We hope one of these fighters breaks our records. I want to help these fighters, and help the fighters grow, and hopefully one day one of them breaks these records," Mayweather said.
