WBC/WBA welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. (48-0, 26KOs) was very impressed by Andre Berto's last performance. Berto (30-3, 23KOs) stopped Josesito Lopez in the sixth round of their March fight in a Premier Boxing Champions on Spike TV card from Ontario, California.
What impressed Mayweather was Berto's ability to come from behind to win. Lopez was winning the fight on two scorecards at the time of the stoppage. He was up 48-47 and 50-45 on two cards, with Berto up 48-47 on the third.
On September 12th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Berto and Mayweather will collide in the main event of a Showtime Pay-Per-View.
Mayweather feels Berto is not getting enough credit from the fans and writers as an all-action boxer who fights to the end.
"I don't feel we give Berto enough credit. The guy can have his eyes closed and continue to fight. He can get knocked down, hop up and continue to fight. He can be down on the scorecards, he will continue to give it 100% - and that's what we wanted," Mayweather said.
"I can only judge a man off his last performance, off his last fight. Marquez could have lost his last fight, but you know what - they are going to remember him for what he did in the Pacquiao fight. I'm only going to judge Berto off his last fight. He did the same thing to Lopez that Canelo did. He handled the job just like Canelo did. I can only judge a man off his last performance. He gave it 100% and the grade I gave him is an A."
