For those waiting to see the Floyd Mayweather of old who likes to trash talk, he made an appearance at the final stop for the Mayweather-Alvarez press tour in Los Angeles. Mayweather has taken a different road lately as he’s toned down the antics and had a more calm approach but he was back to his vintage form Tuesday night and it was due to being provoked.
“In every city Canelo has been quiet. Oscar De La Hoya has been quiet. The other guys [Eddy and Chepo Reynoso] probably didn’t even talk. Now all of a sudden the trainer was all like ‘grow some balls’. They all of a sudden want to talk trash. I truly believe in this, if you dish it out you have to be able to take it. If you talk trash, I will talk trash. You respect me, I respect you. That’s how it works” declared Mayweather.
De La Hoya and Team Canelo were more vocal this time around and maybe it was due to the fact that it was the last stop on a 10 city tour but it didn’t stop Mayweather from responding. After De La Hoya and Canelo had their say, Mayweather took command of the podium.
“They say ‘Mayweather, you know you facing Canelo’ and I say yeah but can you tell just 10 world champions that he’s beat? Just 10, that’s all I ask. Then I say you know what, I’ve been sitting on the top of the throne for 17 years. Every time they get a guy, they build him up and you know what I do? Smack them down” said Floyd.
“And it’s so crazy that Canelo is such a big star but he’s never been on pay per view unless he was on my undercard. But he’s such a big star. He’s such a big star Oscar. You might as well call me the Golden Boy cause I done beat everybody in your whole crew!”
Trash talking is nothing new to boxing and in fact it’s something really drives the promotions and gets everyone excited. While Floyd can talk a good game, he also reminds us he can back it up.
“Oscar De La Hoya on this whole tour has been quiet. Everybody’s been quiet. You notice Oscar’s always got a game plan for an opponent and it always comes up short. Like I said before, I believe in doing good business. Honest business. And one thing you got to realize about Floyd Mayweather is I can fight. That’s what I can do, I can fight”.
The 10 city press tour has now come to a close as both fighters will now concentrate on preparing themselves for their showdown in September. For Canelo it’s returning to Big Bear to train at Shane Mosley’s gym. For Floyd it will be returning to Las Vegas to commence his training camp. Both fighters will have to walk the walk but for now, they’ll do the talk as Mayweather ended with the press conference with a signature statement.
“I’m young, I’m fly, I’m flashy, I’m rich. Damn life is good, see ya’ll September 14th!”
