A few days ago, former five division world champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. left a minor crack for a potential return.
Mayweather (49-0, 26 KOs) said he was "95 percent" certain that he wasn't going to fight again.
He retired in September of 2015, after winning a twelve round unanimous decision over Andre Berto at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Since his retirement, Mayweather has more or less focused on his promotional company, Mayweather Promotions.
Mayweather is promoting this Saturday's super middleweight unification between Badou Jack and James DeGale at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn.
Reporters pressed Mayweather on that "5%" chance of a comeback. This time Mayweather made it a little more clear about his future.
“Am I coming back? Absolutely, not,” Mayweather said Thursday. “I want to live through these fighters.”
“Different days you feel different ways. Today I feel a little different from how I felt yesterday [when I said 95%]. Today there’s 100% chance I want to stay away from the sport of boxing. I’m older. Next month I’ll be 40. I gave boxing a lot, and boxing gave me a lot. I had a great career. It’s time to help other fighters accomplish their dreams.”
Although Mayweather did state on ESPN's "First Take" that he would still consider a cross-sport fight with UFC superstar Conor McGregor.
“Only thing I’m probably interested in is the Conor McGregor fight,” Mayweather said.
Mayweather says he would require a guarantee of $100 million for the McGregor fight. According to Mayweather, his company offered McGregor a guarantee of $15 million for the fight and never heard back. McGregor has not confirmed or denied the offer, but even if it's true he would still require permission from the UFC, who have him under an exclusive contract. UFC President Dana White has already stated that he would never allow McGregor to fight Mayweather in a "boxing match."
