A lawyer for former two division world champion Ricardo Mayorga (32-9-1, 26 KOs) is hunting for what he believes is a smear campaign against his client.
Earlier this month, Mayorga returned to the ring in Managua, Nicaragua and stopped Jaudiel Zepeda (12-18-1, with 9 KOs) of Mexico in the third round. Over 3,000 packed the venue to watch Mayorga perform.
It was Mayorga's first bout since August of 2015, when he was knocked out in a rematch with three division beltholder Shane Mosley.
It appears that a video began circulating on the social networks, and the footage showed a very heated argument that Mayorga had with his wife and mother.
According to Mayorga, that family friction took place seven years ago - but the unknown parties began circulating the footage on heels of the former world champion's comeback campaign.
The local authorities are involved as well, hoping to track the parties down and find out how they obtained that footage.
"They will investigate from where they are sending this from on the social networks. These are threats, harassment, bullying, and intimidation of the family of Ricardo Mayorga. It is very easy [to find these people], because there is cyber-based footprint... if that the person is using a cell phone, a laptop, a home computer - then immediately there is established the IP to show where that originated and who sent the footage. Upon having the results, [Mayorga] will decide if he intends to pursue this criminally and civilly," said Carlos Mario Peña, Mayorga's lawyer.
"I'm aggressive in the ring or publicity as a boxer because that's my job, but if I'm out of my job I'm an educated person, very charitable, I like to do millions of favors without expecting anything in return ... I like to be happy, a person who lives without stress - because a person who lives happily is going to die happy," said Mayorga.
