Former four division world champion Juan Manuel Marquez is hoping that Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez (48-1-1, 34KOs) will use a potential fight with Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (49-2-1, 32KOs) to springboard to a fall showdown with WBC, WBA, IBF, IBO middleweight champion Gennady 'GGG' Golovkin (36-0, 33KOs).
At the moment there are ongoing talks to stage a catch-weight bout between Canelo and Chavez Jr. for an HBO Pay-Per-View event on May 6th. The two boxers are discussing a catch-weight of 165-pounds.
But the biggest fight in boxing at the moment is a clash between Canelo and Golovkin. Fans have been beating the drums for this fight for the last twelve months.
Golovkin is scheduled to make a mandatory defense on March 18th against the very dangerous Daniel Jacobs.
The teams behind Canelo and Golovkin are discussing the details of a fight for next September. For the last few months the two fighters have been unable to reach an agreement on the financial terms. Canelo's team is offering a flat fee, while Golovkin is demanding a percentage of the promotion.
"It would be an important step [to beat Chavez Jr.], but Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. is still in the middle of his comeback and he's not at the best moment in his career. Still, it would be a good, competitive fight.. an interesting fight. But for Canelo, the most interesting fight is still Triple G," Marquez said.
"Everyone keeps asking for it. Canelo Alvarez talks a lot about business, which is important, but sometimes you have to create business. In this case, can you imagine [how big Canelo would become] if he beats Gennady Golovkin."
"If you want to be someone like [Muhammad Ali], you have to beat the type of opponents that you gain something from. Logically it would have to be difficult, strong opponents. To be the best you have to beat the best. And in that aspect Canelo leaves a lot to be desired."
