Former three time welterweight champion Antonio Margarito is ready to rematch Miguel Cotto on July 16. In 2008, Margarito stopped Cotto in the eleventh round. Ever since Margarito was found with illegal handwraps prior to the match with Shane Mosley in January 2009, there have been doubts about the legit nature of Margarito's win over Cotto. The Mexican veteran wants to clear the air with a rematch.
"I'm going to sit down with [Top Rank]. They told me that in the next few days we are going to fix everthing. I believe that the public wants to see a rematch against Cotto and I imagine that [Top Rank] wants to do the fight also. We are going to talk, but I think I think it can be done," indicated Margarito to Jose Gordian.
Margarito wants to return fresh from his dark past. He wants to prove that his punches were the cause of Cotto's wounds in the first meeting.
"Everything is in the past, and the ones who really know about boxing, they know that the punches that I landed is what really hurt Cotto. If he truly wants to try to remove the thorn from his side, we are willing to give him the rematch. He had mentioned once that he was willing to fight against anyone. If he's ready to fight, I'm ready too. I honestly think that I would win this fight if it's presented."
