Mexico's Marco Antonio Rubio makes it clear that he's not trying to chase down a big name opportunity, he just wants to secure his earned right to fight for the World Boxing Council middleweight title, which is currently owned by Miguel Cotto of Puerto Rico. Rubio was the mandatory challenger for Sergio Martinez, but the Argentine star sidestepped that fight to face Cotto in June. Cotto won by technical knockout.
The WBC ordered the Cotto-Martinez winner to face Rubio in their first defense. Cotto is tentative to return in December and Rubio has not really been mentioned as a possible opponent for the date.
"I'm just being honest. What Cotto is looking for are two or three big fights, Mayweather, Pacquiao. He would risk a lot against me, I'm a natural middleweight and he knows that on the day of the fight there would be between 10 and 15 pounds of difference. It's his mandatory fight, I won the right to fight the champion and I demand my right. There should be only one champion and it should be Cotto or me," Rubio said.
"We've been quiet, waiting. I only read news. My promoter is trying, there have been talks with Cotto, and we'll see what's decided."
