Former two-division world champion Gerry Penalosa feels his countryman, Manny Pacquiao, should retire from the sport.
Pacquiao, who won eight divisional titles, dropped a twelve round decision to Floyd Mayweather Jr. last weekend. During the match he aggravated a pre-existing shoulder injury and underwent surgery last Wednesday.
Now at 36-years-old, Pacquiao has achieved everything possible. The fight with Mayweather is likely going to earn him well over $120 million for his bank account.
Penalosa wants Pacquiao to focus on his health and family.
"As his friend, my concern is for his health. I don't want him to fight again unless it's Mayweather. If he's going to keep fighting only to face up and comers then it's not worth it. I don't want to see him used as a stepping stone — he's an icon and a national treasure. I'm not saying he'll be easily beat, but he's not getting any younger," told Peñalosa to GMA News.
"The challenge is not there anymore. Besides his health, [he should] retire for his family. He has achieved it all, he's been at the top of the boxing world, pound-for-pound superstar and world record holder. God has given him everything."
