Former European middleweight champion Matthew Macklin would consider a fight with fellow-Irishman Andy Lee in the future if a clash made sense to both fighters.

The 29 year-old is set to concentrate on building his reputation in the US, where Lee is also based and is hoping to challenge Ring Magazine champion Sergio Martinez on St Patrick’s Day 2012 after a November warm-up.

Macklin has admitted that if Lee comes through his rematch with Bryan Vera on October 1st and is able to pick up a title sometime next year, a bout between the two is a possibility.

"As long as I can keep winning and as long as Andy can keep winning, somewhere down the line you imagine our paths will cross, hopefully for a world title," Macklin told The Irish Voice.

"I wouldn’t like to fight him because I like Andy and I am friendly with him, but if it is for a world title and if it makes sense, then it makes sense."

Lee, 27, is undefeated in eleven bouts since suffering his only loss to Vera in 2008 and will be aiming to avenge the defeat next month when the pair meet in Atlantic City.
