Former world cruiserweight champion Enzo Macarinelli believes that if fellow-Brit Amir Khan is given the opportunity to face pound for pound star Floyd Mayweather Jr, he should grasp it with both hands and take the massive pay day.

The 30 year-old, who is currently in training for a return to the ring at light-heavyweight, also thinks that Khan should be more gracious in his pre-fight hyping of the fight as Mayweather would be his toughest fight and has all the attributes to end Khan’s pound for pound dream.

"You’ve got to be realistic there is a big gulf in class between Zab Judah and Floyd Mayweather Jr. They are a totally different class but there is a lot of fights out there for Amir Khan at the moment,” explained Macarinelli in a recent stint on talkSPORT.

“If he gets the opportunity to fight the pound-for-pound number one on the planet he has nothing to lose. The pay day is going to be phenomenal so I wouldn’t say not to take it. I would just say to be realistic about beating him.”

Khan, 24, is on the back of what some are praising as his best performance when he picked up a second world 140lb title to unify the division against four-time world title holder Zab Judah and Macarinelli says Khan should have every confidence in facing anyone at light-welterweight.

“I thought Khan boxed very well,” he continued. “That was probably the best I’ve seen him.

“He set his stall out, he fired sharp shots and Zab Judah couldn’t cope with his speed. Don’t get me wrong this isn’t the Zab of six or seven years ago but he was still competitive enough that he should have given Khan a big test but Amir Khan just wiped the floor with him.”
