Luke Campbell earned Great Britain its second Olympic boxing Gold medal with a 14-11 win over Ireland's John Joe Nevin.

The bout was a fitting final piece of their trilogy and also befitting of the long-standing rivalry between Great Britain and Ireland. The action was fierce throughout and anyone's game until Campbell surged through in the final round to seal the deal.

Campbell enjoyed an early start, beating Nevin to the punch and giving his hometown fans every reason to erupt in applause. The atmosphere was reminiscent of Irish female lightweight Katie Taylor's quarterfinals win over Great Britain's own, only with the stakes much higher in Saturday's bantamweight finals.

Nevin might have been the visiting fighter, but his Ireland nation well close enough for his legion of supporters to allow their voices to be heard. The fighting Irishman responded with an intelligent second round, getting the better of his British counterpart by establishing his desired punching range. It wasn't enough to take the lead, but well enough to make it a one-point game heading into the climactic third round.

The final three minutes saw the heart of a champion in Campbell, determined to become the first male fighter from his team to capture Olympic Gold.

Nicola Adams already assured the hosting nation the top prize in at least one division when she ran the gamut in the women's flyweight division. A huge third round for Campbell - complete with an official knockdown -  allowed him to beat the rest of his male counterparts to the amateur game's Holy Grail.

Nevin was the last remaining fighter for Team Ireland, which earned four medals total in boxing competition. The silver medal earned in this fight adds to the nation's two bronze and one gold captured earlier in the week.

Great Britain still has two fighters alive in the finals, with welterweight Freddie Evans and super heavyweight Anthony Joshua both slated to fight in their division's respective championships on Sunday afternoon (London time).
