Argentina's Lucas Matthysse has scheduled a meeting later this month with his promoter, Golden Boy Promotion,s in which they will make a united decision to determine whether of not the boxer will remain at 140 pounds or goes up to 147. They will also discuss potential fights with Ruslan Provodnikov and Mauricio Herrera.
Golden Boy vice president Eric Gomez said the meeting will shed a lot of light on what the plans will be for Matthysse (37-4, 34KOs) in 2016. In his last time out in the ring, last October, Matthysse was knocked out in ten round by Ukrainian fighter Viktor Postol when they clashed for the vacant WBC 140-pound title in an HBO televised bout.
"So far we have not discussed anything. He and his team want to make a trip to Los Angeles next week to meet with us," said Gomez to ESPN Deportes. "He has been talking about a rematch with Ruslan Provodnikov, it is likely that can happen, but obviously we will sit down with him because he also told us that he wants to move up to 147. We will discuss all of these options. If he wants to go up there, we will see if Ruslan or whoever else might want to go to 147 pounds and what other opponents are there."
Whether Mauricio Herrera is a possibility to face Matthysse after rejecting an offer for Terence Crawford , Gomez said that is also a possibility.
"Mauricio is on the short list, of course. He is a possibility, but it depends on the weight because we have to see if Lucas wants to go up. It seems that Provodnikov is comfortable fighting at 147 pounds, so we'll analyze it," he said .
Members of Golden Boy Promotions are in Mexico City for the delivery of green belt to Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez on Monday. The ceremony will be led by WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman.
