On February 9th, Erickson “The Hammer” Lubin’s first fight with world class trainer Kevin Cunningham was an overwhelming success.
Fighting on the Gervonta Davis-Hugo Ruiz undercard, the 23-year-old Lubin became the first fighter to stop former champion Ishe Smith. Lubin dropped Smith 4 times overall and the fight was stopped after the third round.
Cunningham would like to see his fighter return to the ring in June in another step up type of fight and then target a world championship.
He believes that after a second stint at his Camp Cunningham Gym in South Florida that Lubin will be ready for the super welterweight division’s best and he has a target in mind.
“Hammer and I are going to do some great things together. Give us one more fight together and then the winner of Harrison-Charlo can get it!” Cunningham told BoxingScene.com.
Lubin’s only career loss came when he was caught cold in the first round by Jermell Charlo in 2017 and he previously told BoxingScene.com that he would like to avenge that loss. He also told us that he dominated Tony Harrison when they sparred and would love to get his hands on him in a real fight.
Last year, Harrison pulled off what many saw as the Upset of The Year' with an unexpected twelve round decision over Charlo. There is a rematch clause which Charlo plans to exercise.
