The BBBoC’s most recent British championship notice has handed Morecambe’s Isaac Lowe (14-0-3, 5 KOs) a second run at the British featherweight title following his draw against Ryan Walsh (22-2-2, 11 KOs) on the undercard of George Groves’s decision win over Chris Eubank Jr. at the Manchester Arena last month.
Lowe protested the decision long and hard, and will now get another shot after the Board decided to order an immediate rematch.
Scores of 115-114, 114-116 and 115-115 from Marcus McDonnell, Steve Gray and Michael Alexander respectively ensured that Walsh held on to his belt, but Jimmy Harrington, Lowe’s trainer, believes that his man deserved the nod and will prevail in the rematch, which has to take place by the end of July after being sent out to purse bids.
“Common sense has prevailed,” said Harrington when speaking to the Lancaster Guardian.
“There had to be a rematch really and thankfully the board have made sure it's going to happen. [Manager] Steve [Wood] won the bids last time and hopefully is going to do it again. We'll just have to wait and see what happens.”
Harrington also revealed that they hope to keep Lowe active in the meantime in order to ensure that he is in the best possible shape for the rematch.
“It could be that we get him out a couple of times before then,” he added. “I don't want him out for too long, he needs to keep busy.”
