Tom Loeffler, promoter for WBA/IBO/WBC/IBF middleweight champion Gennady 'GGG' Golovkin (35-0, 32KOs), says the possibility of an upset is always there if his fighter is not 100% in the ring. And because of that, the entire team is taking Kell Brook (36-0, 25KOs) very seriously.
Golovkin will travel overseas to defend his title against Brook at the O2 Arena in London.
Brook, who holds the IBF welterweight title, is considered to be a very huge underdog, because he's moving up by thirteen pounds to face Golovkin at 160-pounds. Golovkin has been on a rampage streak, stopping his last 22 opponents inside the distance.
Loeffler cautions, that a single off-night could lead to a very big defeat. Loeffler also works with former heavyweight king Wladimir Klitschko and reminds everyone how Klitschko was a massive favorite to beat Tyson Fury last November, but the unthinkable happened when Fury outboxed Klitschko to win a twelve round unanimous decision and picked up the IBF/WBA/IBO/WBO titles. It was Klitschko's first loss in over a decade.
"He's in a tough situation every time he steps in the ring. He's the number one guy now. He's the alpha dog. He's the top middleweight champion, you have four middleweight titles there. So everyone is going to come in there at the top of their game to beat him. If he has one off-night.... look at what happened to Wladimir Klitschko. He was dominant for so long. He had one off-night and lost all of his titles to Tyson Fury and the same thing could happen to Gennady," Loeffler said.
"If he has a bad night... he had the flu when he fought [Gabe] Rosado in New York and if he's not at the top of his game... its not like basketball or baseball where you can have a bad game and still win a championship. If he has a bad night he could lose all these titles."
