Former WBA lightweight champion Jorge Linares would like to work his way to a rematch with Vasyl Lomachenko.
Linares returned to the lightweight division back in February, when he stopped Carlos Morales.
Their fight took place in May 2018. The Venezuelan scored the first knockdown of Lomachenko’s professional career, but two-time Olympic gold medal winner was able to really back to win, when he knocked Linares out with a liver shot in the tenth round.
Linares was going in the direction of a fight with the new kid on the block, hot prospect Ryan Garcia.
Once the coronavirus pandemic is resolved, there is no telling if Linares vs. Garcia is still the plan on the agenda.
If possible, Linares would like to get Lomachenko in the ring to make things right.
"Yes, maybe one day. I have a good relationship with Lomachenko. The last time I saw him was at the WBO Congress in Japan. And he also wants this fight. But now I am a little lower in the rankings, and he is on top. So I need to rise up. And I had a terrific bout [with Morales]. Maybe in the next fight, maybe this year, maybe next year, but I am ready for this," Linares told VRinge.
"I remember very well that I was in great condition for the fight against Lomachenko. I have had an incredible experience with him because he is the best boxer that I have ever faced, in my amateur and professional career. He is the best champion, he gave me a lot of experience. But I want a rematch, so I am training very hard. I really want to fight Lomachenko one more time. This is all about strategy. We need to develop a good strategy. It is always important in boxing."
Lomachenko, who holds the WBC franchise, WBA, WBO lightweight belts, is being steered to a unification with IBF champion Teofimo Lopez in the fall.
